Over the second weekend in March, on an island midway between Victoria and mainland Tasmania, you will find one of the most unique running events in the country, the King Island Imperial 20. The event is now in its 22nd year. The King Island Imperial 20 has an event for everyone. The main feature is a challenging 32 kilometre footrace which is the only coast to coast race in Australia. Sun 8 Mar MALLACOOTA FUN RUN (VIC)
The Mallacoota Fun Run offers participants a picturesque running course in far east Gippsland, Victoria. The half marathon, 10km, 5km and 3km courses offer runners and walkers a variety of challenges set against stunning bush and ocean backdrops. Sun 22 Mar 30TH ANNUAL WESTON CREEK HALF MARATHON (ACT)
The 30th running of this great club organised Half Marathon. The course starts at Black Mountain Peninsula on Lake Burley Griffin and follows bike paths along the lake shore and out to Woden before returning to the start. A beautiful course. Race numbers to be collected at the Northern end of John Carver close, which is a short walk from the start line. Detailed course description: The course starts at the end of Garryowen drive on Black Mountain Peninsula. Runners will proceed along Garryowen drive and turn left onto the shared path just before Lady Denman drive. Runners then proceed along the shared path, (keeping to the left hand side) around West Basin and over Scrivener dam before following shared paths past the ovals at Curtin, under McCulloch street and adjacent to Yarra glen. The shared path then crosses under Melrose Drive and passes the pitch n putt in Woden. Shortly after runners turn and retrace their steps to Black Mountain Peninsula. Here they turn right onto the bike path near the rowing sheds and enter John Cardiff Close for the finish. Sun 12 Apr GEELONG HALF MARATHON SUNDAY APRIL 12, 2015 (VIC)
26th Geelong Half Marathon Sunday April 12, 2015 at 8:00 a.m. The Geelong Half-Marathon is a popular and professionally run event with over 1000 entries last year. The course along the banks of the Barwon River in Geelong is scenic and away from road traffic. This run always takes place on the first Sunday after Easter (Sunday April 12, 2015). The start is 8:00 am on the day and is easily found under the Moorabool Street Bridge in Geelong with plenty of nearby parking. There is over $3500 in prizes as well as additional spot prizes. As in past years, there is a $200 bonus for anyone breaking the open records. Entry is online ONLY through our website www.gccc.asn.au There are spot prizes of running shoes and Garmin Sports Watches for early entries. Entries close Tuesday March 31, 2015. Adult entry is $50, concession $40. An additional feature is the relay section with a team of three runners running approximately 3 X 7 km. The cost per team is 3 X $30. On-line entries will be available from early December. Entry numbers will be capped at 1200 and a race time cut-off will apply. The Jabulani Challenge is a stunning trail run through the Ku-Ring-Gai National Park in the north of Sydney. Predominantly on single track the trail has everything to offer from waterside tracks, rainforest bushland, steep hill inclines and creek crossings. Sun 3 May SRI CHINMOY SYDNEY 2015 SERIES RACE 4 - ROYAL NATIONAL PARK MARATHON, HALF-MARATHON, 10KM & 5KM TRAI (NSW)
Willow Tree Flat, Audley, Royal National Park Some of Australia's loveliest bushland is right on Sydney's doorstep: there is no better way to appreciate and enjoy the sublime Royal National Park than running along its extensive network of tracks and trails. For the first time, enjoy a new Marathon course through the heart of Australia's oldest National Park. This is not a "technical" trail run, the course following mostly fire trails and well-graded walking tracks. Park at Loftus Train Station and take the event bus to the start ($10 return trip), or park at Willow Tree Flat (Park entry fee of $11 applies). On-the-day registration for the Marathon opens at 6.30am and closes at 6.55am; registration for other distances opens at 6.45am and closes at 7.55am. Wed-Thu 6-7 May DARKNESS TO DAYLIGHT CHALLENGE (QLD)
Law firm Minter Ellison is challenging all of us to get involved in running, walking or volunteering at the 110km Darkness to Daylight Challenge to speak out against domestic violence. With 110 women, children and men dying because of this silent epidemic every year, we will make a difference on 6 and 7 May by raising awareness and funds for domestic violence prevention. Sat 16 May THE GREAT BREAKAWAYS MARATHON (SA)
The Great Breakaways Marathon travels from the Breakaways, along the Dog Fence, down Kempe Road (road to Oodnadatta) and finishes at the town oval where it wraps up with a BBQ. Participants can either walk, run or ride the distance as a personal challenge or as a group completing a portion of the distance together, doing either 5, 10, 15, 21 or the full 42km (can only walk to 21km). Participants are required to pay an entry fee (a portion of the fees go to a chosen local community group or cause). Sat-Sun 23-24 May YMCA OF CANBERRA RUNNERS CLUB HALF MARATHON (ACT)
For many years the Half Marathon weekend has been a major annual event in the calendars of YCRC members and other local and interstate runners and the tradition continues. Saturday 23rd May offers social runners and families a chance to compete in shorter runs, and Sunday 24th May is the day of the Half Marathon. Mark off the weekend of the 23rd/24th May in your calendars for the 2015 Half Marathon weekend! Rex Foulkes, in whose memory this event is named, was a local distance runner, who died in a road accident returning to Cooma from Canberra after a race in 1970. The first Rex Foulkes Half Marathon held on 13th September 1970 had just 24 finishers. In 2014 there were 373 entrants. The Surf Coast Trail Marathon is a trail running event offering participants marathon and half marathon runs along the stunning Surf Coast Walk tracking from Torquay to Fairhaven on Victoria's famed Surf Coast, an hour south west of Melbourne. In the marathon, you can have a crack at the full distance solo, or knock off roughly half each in teams of two. Or try the half for a taster. This is the perfect event for ALL runners - road or trail orientated - eyeing the two quintessential distances. For road runners it offers a first taste for trail, without being intimidating as a relatively non-technical, non-remote, non-mountainous trail. For experienced trailites, the route still features stunning wilderness with coastal viewpoints you won't believe (and becomes a truly go-fast course with plenty of good twists and turns). Sun 11 Oct HOUNSLOW CLASSIC - 21KM SKYRUN (NSW)
Starting int he Blue Mountains township of Blackhealth the Hounslow Classic 21km event takes runners past Govetts Leap and into the Grose Valley, passing through the Grand Canyon, Junction Rock and traversing Rodriguez Pass. This could eb the toughest half marathon run you ever do. Sun 1 Nov GREAT BARRIER REEF MARATHON FESTIVAL (QLD)
The Great Barrier Reef Marathon Festival is on November 1st in Port Douglas. The 74km JCU Ultra Marathon now begins on Four Mile Beach, journeys out into Mowbray Valley, heading up the infamous "Bump Track" and then turning left onto Black Mountain Road to tackle the stunning trails of Twin Bridges. This is one epic challenge and a seriously challenging event. Not for the faint hearted either, the 42.195km Steve Moneghetti Marathon follows a similar course with the inclusion of the Bump Track, but with first a loop through the pristine valley of Spring Creek before heading for the infamous climb. This event turns around at the top of the track and heads back into Port Douglas along the palm tree lined streets of Port Douglas - an adventure marathon like no other! There is also the 21.1km Sheraton Mirage Resort Port Douglas Half Marathon which also begins on the beach and the 10km Newsport Daily run, a hot lap around the township of Port Douglas from the beach to suburbia, through hidden trails and back along the palm tree lined streets. Also on offer for those preferring a more 'fun run' approach is the 5km Port Douglas Fundy 5000 and the 2.5km Coles Junior Challenge.
