I've just received an email from Super Sprint advising that no splits will be available from the various races at the Olympic Distance Triathlon Championships at Geelong over Easter. Here is an extract:
This afternoon (Wednesday 19th April) we have been advised by Top Tag Timing that following a failure of their system on Sunday they have only been able to retrieve data from their equipment located at the Finish Line but not any of the transition timing points. Earlier in the day we had been advised that they also could not retrieve any data as their electronic back-up system had also failed.
Personally, that makes 4 races this season where the organisers have been unable to deliver complete timing results. Are there others with similar experiences or am I extremely unlucky?

That is very diaspointing. we are all wanting to know times to the second no matter what level we are.
Last year I was very disappointed when in the 8km run(3 run series) one of the my times for some reason failed to register and considering by my watch I had done a PB I was even more disappointed
understand how you feel : |
but remember there are MUCH worse things

I sent them an email explaining my disappointment.
After paying $95 plus $1 for the immediate results,
Not getting a Gatorade Tri Race Singlet as advertised on the entry,
and last some mongrel stealing my arm warmers made not getting the results even worse.

I was disappointed too, but not too much considering that I only completed the 1500m swim due to getting severe hypothemia!! (body temp down to 30 degrees !!) ( i did not have a wetsuit and did not honestly believe it would be THAT cold). So I paid 100 dollars for a very, very cold swim in the bay!
I was looking forward to getting my tri singlet however, not just another far too big t-shirt.
yes, very disappointing but otherwise an interesting day......i heard that the bike course was quite technical?? yes?

I did the Protiviti enduro race and was very disappeared with the complete stuff up in timings. What's worse is that thye obviously knew something was up before they started because thye had people calling out the numbers at each timing point (like that was ever gonna work). I heard Protiviti had other issues during the season, is that why you 4 problem races?

I did the Gatorade series and this was the first timing issue that I've encountered all year, needless to say very disappointing. As SlowDave says, I also know a few competitors in the Protiviti races that encountered regular timing problems.
Downunder runner, I feel for you.
It was freezing, even with a wetsuit - I didn't get feeling back into my feet until 5km into the run! The bike course IMHO wasn't technical, it was just a long way out and felt kinda lonely without people cheering on the sidelines as you would get in St Kilda or Elwood. Similar to the Port Arlington tri in that respect.
The hardest part of the bike was the road surface, there were very few sections that were smooth, which made for a very bumpy ride.
The run was fine, except why they put the second drink station on an incline I'll never know!
Oh, and if you wash your race t-shirt and put it in the dryer it shrinks down to something more wearable.

thanks for your empathy Casie....I am disappointed to have finished my first triathlon season with a DNF... particularly since it was not due to not being fit enough, but just not realising what 15 degree water can do to my skinny female body after after a long swim.
Thank you very much for sharing your description of the bike course...I suffered a bad cycling accident (landing on my face, hospital 3 days, plastic surgery !!) also just 3 weeks prior to the event and when a friend said it was technical, now I think he was just trying to make me feel better about not being able to do it.
How did you go? Is this your first go at the Olympic Distance also? What a real bummer that swim, bike and run times will never be known....did you time yourself?

Don't worry Downunder it's not just skinny female bodies. My first Pier to Pub I did without a wetsuit on an absolute shocker of a day. I finished in about 40 mins (my mates thought I'd drowned), with no wetsuit and hypothermia. Because my mates were looking everywhere for me I couldn't get my clothes or towel and had to stand on the beach in howling winds soaking wet. With the heater in the car flat out it took till Geelong for me to get feeling back in my hands and feet. the next day was the most trashed I have ever felt after any kind of race. Since then I'v used a wetsuit in every race.

Surely the classic timing problem for the year was with the Protivi Enduro race this year where they selected timing bands that weren't waterproof and so expected everyone to take off their timing band after finishing the first run and putting it on again after the second swim. There are enough people that take off with their helmet on after the bike (myself included once) that it's crazy to expect too much in the heat of the race.
For myself, I guess I was lucky with only 3 races where the timing was less that average, but I guess thats almost 50% of my races for the summer <_<

You guys should try entering a race up here. I think the standard timing instrument in brisbane is the sun-dial.

Geelong was my first Tri.
I did the Brooks as a bit of a tester for next years Gatorade series. I don't have a wetsuit, and I didn't think many other Brooks compeitiors would.
I was wrong.
I was one of a handfull silly enough to turn up without a wetsuit, and even sillier I thought what was the point of skipping the swim on my first tri.
I've been swimming a couple of months, I thought I had sorted out my breathing. But I ended up swimming the whole way with my head above water because the cold water made me hyperventilate. I'm glad I wasn't out there for 1.5k!!
The funny thing was I was warm as toast on the bike.
I wasn't to fussed about the timing problems as I was just doing it to get used to transitions (and I recorded my own leg splits at least). But I would have been pretty annoyed if I was doing the Gatorade series.

Yep and then add to that, the timing bands had to have the big plastic bit facing forward at the timing points. Don't about your ankle but no matter how tight I put the bloody thing on it kept slipping to be side on so I had to stop at each timing point to re-adjust it.

My problem races were, Gatorade Sandringham, Gatorade Port Arlington, the now infamous Protiviti Mordialloc Enduro and finally Gatorade Geelong OD. I got all the splits in only one race - Protiviti Elwood.
I should add that Top Tag were receptive to my complaints, and through a combination of my watch, remembering who I raced next to, and their partial results, I was able to generate some splits for Sandy and Port Arlington.
Also, in four years of tris, there's never been anything like these problems.
On the topic of cold at Geelong, I had a lot more success. Did a warmup run before the race and not a warmup swim. Swam with full length wet suit, 2 swim caps new goggles and no race top underneath. At T1 put on 2 dry tops - 1 of these was long sleeve. Also put on socks - somthing I have never done before. Stayed warm on the slightly technical ride and stripped off the long sleeve top at T2. Yes, a bit slower but so much more enjoyable :D

The official results for the Age Group, Olympic Distance race at Geelong shows 838 individuals and 23 teams finished the race. No DNFs or DQs are shown.

I did recall reading about your accident. You did remarkably well to get to the starting line.
It was my first Oly distance, I've done a season of Brooks and now a season of the Gatorade. I always thought Olympic distances were for Olympians!
I finished, about 4 mins over my goal time, I was out there for a long time! My swim was much slower than anticipated, but apparently my wave in general was slower than anticipated. I have an idea for the swim, vague time for the bike, but no idea about transition times or the run. I think I may have actually done a pb in the run, but I'll never know!!
Are you going to race next season?

hi Casie.......thanks for replying...so happy for you that you completed the Olympic Distance! It is my first season also, had only done 3 mini triathlons and 1 sprint triathlon before I had my cycling accident and then attempted the Olympic Distance. My mother in law is still upset with me about the hypothermia - but I did not do it on purpose!!! (who would?).
I noticed you are doing the Great Ocean half...I am wanting to do it too....but have to convice my other half. ARe you doing the Puffing Billy this Sunday? I am , it is a great day.
I have not been swimming and only cycled twice since Geelong event....sticking to what I know best for a while........running...

downunder runner, we'll just hijack this thread!
No puffing billy for me. I'll just be out there trying to clock up 18 or so kms! Slowly at that.
I'm riding and swimming when I feel like it - not very often at this stage! Trying to get myself in one piece to the starting line of the GOR half, then there'll be some more resting and I'll ramp up the training. I really want to do a half IM at the end of the year.
Have a great run this weekend!
