Today at school I was asked if I would like to organise some teams for a Torre Interschool Challenge-MiniRogaine. It will be held in April in some of the local bushland.I believe it is something like Orienteering which I have some experience at.A few of the team members are good cross country runners so it would be interesting to see how they perform.Does anyone out there have experience in this area of the sport that could give me some pointers or direction that I can pass on to the students. thanks heaps, keep on runnin'

It could be described as free form orienteering! This site NSW Rogaining is a good place to start, but there are many of us here that enjoy a good rogain so I am sure you will get some more good pointers. :)

Hi all,

Now I have the answer to a question I asked last week.

While on an easy run in Pennant Hills last Sunday I had all these people running and walking around me.

Action with 16 to go too 2000 are you going to let us know what you were doing in 1984?

cheers Plu

Hi

It's a great thing to do. I started rogaining at the our interschools last year, and since then I've done 2 or 3 more including the vic champs.

At school events the navigaion is usually easier than normal, especially close to the start.

Rogaine maps are different to orienteering maps, they arn't as accurate, and is stuff left purposly of them, such as SOME minor roads and tracks.

Because you are runner, you should be able to run the whole way easily enough, but don't rush. Always walk as you get close to a control, and always know exactly where you are, as you probably know from orienteering, a mistake can cost you alot of time.

I don't know how long a mini rogaine is...Our school one was 5 hours. In that you should carry with you very little. Mostly water, some lollies, mabey a jam sandwich or 2, just to keep you satisfied. You shouldn't carry extra cloths, wear what you start with for the enitre event. And of course the first aid kit between you

Long pants are a good idea, if you can get some light ones. If there are irritating or spiky plants you need to run through, they are healpfull. I like to wear running gear though, as my pants can fold up to the size of your fist and clip onto the outside of your bag.

Hope it helps

Rogaining is normally over 12 or 24 hours, a Mini-Rogaine would usually be 6 hrs. For your first one, I would recommend walking boots/shoes rather than runners, and plenty of anti-blister preparation. Also, the long pants suggested are definitely a good idea if the rogaine is in native bush - find out where your nearest orienteering club is and they can probably put you onto a supplier of lightweight nylon orienteering pants/suits and gaiters. Ticks may be a problem, so use an insect repellent, preferably all over, but at least on any exposed skin and where clothes overlap (eg ankles, waist, neck, cuffs and ears). The World Rogaine Champs (24 hrs) will be held in NSW (the Warrumbungles) in October this year - check out the web site [URL=http://www.rogaine2006.com.au] :)

Thanks for all the help so far,it's surprising how big it must be and yet not much is known outside of the group who actually organize and run in it. The area that it is being held is bush and undulating with several creeks so it will be interesting to see how we go.The rules appear easy but how the kids interpret them might be another thing. Anyway keep on running :) :)
