There are exercises I use in the winter to complement my swimming but you want to be careful to keep doing some swimming. Low weight, high rep weights for triceps and lats are good, as is boxing (particularly floor to ceiling bag). But the biggest mistake I made one year was to stop swimming altogether and rely on weight work during the winter. When I got back to swimming, the weight work might have helped my muscles but totally destroyed my technique (I assume because the wrong muscles we were getting worked out).
