A new year and a new goal. I am once again setting out to participate as a team in the 2006 Rydges Capricorn Half Ironman, at Yeppoon in August. Two years running and I'm still keen. Just thought I'd post to see if anyone else has set their sights on it yet, and have a chat about this and that.
Happy training.

Hi Kate

Great to see you're setting yourself some goals for the new year - always the easiest way to train when you have a focus.

While Yeppoon is still a little far off for some others, there were a few CRs who competed in this, and the other Half Ironmans in the series last year. You'll find a lot of good advice, and chatting partners over here

This one is on my list of to-do's this year.

Looking forward to getting that HIM monkey off my back once and for all!

(Unless of course I am going to Kona ;) )

The ride leg from what I can remember from observing the last two years, as I ran the HM leg, are some flat, some long slow hills which other can verify as to how intense/steep they are, which I am guessing is low to medium intensity/steepness. And the other thing to watch out for is as the day progresses the wind gets stronger, so the longer you are on the bike, the more time fighting a headwind one way the longer you are on the bike. but dont let that deter you, just be aware of it so you can get through it.
Good luck training.

The run leg runs from the resort grounds, starts off fairly flat, then has some long slow up and down hills as you exit the grounds and head towards the golf course, that the bike also shares. Then you enter into the a coastal woodland, on a track that fits a 4wd, so there are two car wheel tracks, and some of it is sandy, but there is also some gravel along most of the track, at least on one side. This section has lots of little hills up and down, and turning left and right, and one would call it a mild intensity cross country track. This then comes back to the resort grounds and is flat again with mild rises as you come to the transition area. The website (http://www.capricornhalf.com/) will tell you this much, and also that it is three laps, with approx. half on the road and half in the sandy small hilled coastal woodland. So you get to see your supporters as you go past, which is hopefully always encouraging.
I hope this helps.

Decent size event, last year there were 26 teams (total number of male, female and mixed - results on the web) and 425 individuals.
Good luck and have fun training!
I'll be the runner with the pink visor, so keep an eye out for me.
Im thinking of making up a t-shirt for my team this year as well.

The event website is here..

And here are some more sites you might be interested in. I'm heading to Perth in December to do the Busselton IM. Website is here.

This one is all about Ironman.

And this one is for the Port Macquarie Ironman, but if you go into the Qualifying Series heading, there is a list of all the big events and their websites.

How is your tri training going?

Jo........you are totally amazing! You are doing the Ironman in Perth in December? WOW !!

Please let me know how you can do all the training required, especially since you have 2 (or is it 3) children!!

My tri training is going well for a beginner...I am about to go into my 3rd mini triathlon....I came 2nd in my age group and 7th overall a couple of weeks ago, so that was fantastic...having a running background really has helped heaps.

thanks for the links....good luck to all doing this half ironman !!!!

i cannot seem to find details about team entries online at this event. I assume that you need a team of 3.....but please correct me if I am wrong. I would love to do the run leg, my hubby would be interested in the ride leg, but what about swimmng? Can I do this as well or do we need another team member?

Looks like a great resort to stay at also. Is it very expensive or do they 'do deals' for triathletes?

thanks for any info...

Not sure about whether team entries are permitted for this *particular* event (they're not permitted at all of the HIMs in the qualifying series) - however, if they do allow team entries, the team can be made up of either 2 or 3 members. I've often done this in the past and completed the swim/bike when I've been injured and unable to run.

Hey DR, well 3 December is still 10 months away - so I'm ramping up slowly. I have 4 kids now, and a pretty good husband who is chief babysitter when I need to train. All my runs are done really early in the morning - hubby leaves for work by 6.45am. My long cycle is done on a Sat morning for 3 hrs - but again, because I leave in the dark the kids are still asleep. I do my long run on Sundays so that I can at least run in the heat. Swimming is at a pool that has a kiddy pool too, so hubby takes the kids to the baby pool while I do my laps. We do a lot of hi-bye at the front door ie he walks in, I'm ready to go out. We do still see each other but all this training gets my cranky-meter down! :D
We are flying to Perth to see hubby's parents anyway, but at least Busselton is 232k south of Perth so not too much in-my-face time with rellies. ;) I figure, I'd hate to be there and watching instead of having a go, so it's on my list.
It sounds like your training is going great. That is excellent you came 2nd in your age-group!! But you've always been an awesome athlete so doing well at triathlon is just a natural progression for you.
As far as accommodation goes, look up www.tritravel.com.au - I think they do deals. I wish you all the best for your next race.
