Full Version: Grays Point to the Gong (60km)

JoggerKev
A small group of Billy's Bushies are organising a Fat Ass run as a Six Foot Track training run, and have 'borrowed' heavily from Lawrence Mead's Gone to the Gong 100km.

The main difference between the two runs is the starting point at Grays Point, rather than the Opera House. As a result the distance will be reduced to approx 60km ~ about half bush half road.

The run will provide an opportunity to run across the new Sea Cliff Bridge just south of Coal Cliff which opened last month. We hope to, in the future, organise a further off road version at the tracks at the top of the escarpment.

Provisional directions document will be loadeed to fatassworld.com over the weekend.

Any idea when?
JoggerKev
Sorry - i think its 28th Jan.
JoggerKev
There are some more details on the run incl course here

Someone might want to revise the "aid summary" part (I don't think the run goes via Berowra.)

Looks like a good run though. Too far for me.

I'm seriously thinking about doing this, my first fatass run. With the option that I might only do the 30k.

But I only want to take it easy, as a training run, and only if there are a few others willing to run at a nice easy pace.

Anyone else thinking of doing it?
Electric Legs
Give me until tonight (Tuesday) to check this out. I am keen to do only 30km, that far will hurt a bit as I have been doing bugger all. I am not doing SixFoot. I live in Helensburgh so I could fit in somehow...
nikolay
The 30k option sounds good (60k is too long for me training for 6ft). Are there lots of hills from Garie Beach Rd to Otford (Garrawarra Ridge firetrail and the Cliff Track)? If not, that would be a fairly flat run (except for the climb on the Walumarra track which gains less than 100m as far as I can remember).
Electric Legs
Alright. Couldn't help myself. I know the this run partly (Burning Palms area to Otford). I usually run loops back to Helensburgh (amoung others)....anyway.

Unless there are issues I wouldn't mind running the course from Grays Point to Otford then back up the hill to Helensburgh. I'd say I will be feeling a bit ordinary so would trek back up Otford Rd rather than the bush tracks. It is a bit quicker.

My wife is working from lunchtime too so it would be preferable to run early as possible. Nando you can park your car at my place if you want and I may be able to find us a lift back to Grays Point. I'll check it out with the lift, the wife and see what gives (this might be the same person!!). Nando, how long you looking at taking it easy for. 30km approx. time fot this fella would help too!!!! It is about 2km or a bit more from Otford lookout to my house.
nando
Electric Legs,

I would normally be doing a LSD 30k in 2:40 - 3:00, so anything at this pace or slower would be OK.
Electric Legs
I think that sounds fine. Very keen to see this run and may use it in the future for long stuff.
I may be buggered at the end but looking forward to it. Haven't found a lift yet but will sort it out.
Gunther.
Any thoughts of re-running this race in the old fat arse format ??? ie Opera House to the Gong ?

It hasn't been considered for Saturday week - however given the start time of 6am from Grays Point, starting from the Opera House would mean a very early start!! ;)

Based on my preference for off-road running, my intention was to amend the race in future to include trail running between Otford and Bulli, leaving only the bikeway to the lighthouse 'on-road'.

The original fat ass format is probably better suited to another time of year also, given the potential temperature in January.

Would be quite keen to have a shot at the 30k option. It would be my first fatass(1/2 anyway) as well. I ran from loftus oval carpark down to audley and along lady carrington drive return last weekend, and it is one of the best runs around in summer with so much shade.
ComoGlenn
Chappo, I'll be there - 6am Gray's Point. I'm up for the 60k. Looking forward to it.

Dammit, checked with the wife and the weekend is booked. Looks like another great event passes me by. Only 10 mins from home as well.

I am still trying to get back for another run the the bushies chappo, last time I turned up I missed the start.

Is anyone doing the six foot training on sundays? How long/tough are the runs ?
Chappo
I haven't done Billy's training runs this year, but they must be up to close to 30kms. ComoGlenn is doing them though (I think), so might be able to give you more details.

Thanks Chappo, they sound good. I am off this arvo for my long run through the Royal NP so I won't make it this week, but I'd like to tag along for a few of them before the big race.

Have fun next saturday.

Just a reminder that the GP2G is being held this Saturday (28th) at 6am.

If you have read the waiver that you MUST sign and are still keen to run then please email me to let us know you are coming.

Thanks Chappo....I'm looking forward to the GP2G albeit in a masochistic kind of way. I will be taking it very slowly having never attemted to run that far before. My training for the 6FT has been underdone again this year... so this run will either kill me or cure me. I will be easily recognised if I make it to the lighthouse. I will be the one crashed out on the grass waiting for the ambos to bring the oxyygen.
Cheers

I should be there, at least for the 30k option, and dragging along a mate.
nikolay
I'll probably come but only for the half. How are you guys getting back from Wollongong / Otford? Are you catching the train?
Boy_1_der
I intend to run. Not sure if I will make the whole distance but I will probably be a bit slower than 10km/hr.
Have checked the train timetable to find out where trains stop at which times. It is not possible to catch a train from Central to Sutherland (or Gymea on the Cronulla line) in time for the start.
Coming back from Wollongong, the closest station to Grays Pt is Sutherland unless you want to stuff around changing trains.
Looks like I will have to drive to Sutherland station and run to Grays Pt for the start. That is a better option than attempting to run to Grays Pt after catching the train back from the 'Gong.
:)

Third post - I feel like a veteran at this. Billy's Sunday runs are now up to about 35ks, although I missed last Saturday as I was doing it tough in the Vic Rip to River run in 40 degree temperatures. Meet at Waterfall station car park at 6am and bring a drink to throw in the back of Billy's truck.
nando
nikolay,

I will be catching the train back to Sutherland. Haven't checked the timetable though.

I'm a bit concerned about having enough water, as the only taps seem to be not far into the run at Audley. I will be carrying my fuel belt so might have to ration the water.
nando
For those finishing at Otford and catching the train back to Sutherland, there is a 10.19 train that arrives at Sutherland at 10.47. After that the next train is 12.19, unless you head the Helensburgh.

So hopefully should be time to finish the run, grab some refreshments and get the train back.

Or, if you really want to push it, catch the 9:25 train from Helensburgh.

Re hydration – I was thinking of running with just one water bottle (fuel belt), but may reconsider and run with my backpack with an extra bottle in it.

A mighty fine run. Only did the 28.2k option to Otford and caught the train back with Johnny and Nickolay. Weather was good and some great scenery along the way. Johnny and I ended up finishing in 2:56:07.

Thanks to Chappo for organising it and supplying drinks along the way, and thanks to all the other runners who make it an enjoyable day.

Definitely not my last fatass event.
Chappo
Thanks for everyone for turning up on such a warm day - was worried that there'd only be two or three people, and instead we had 16!

I'm putting together the results, and will post them on the fatass website in due course.

If anyone would like to write a race report to be posted to the fatass website, it would be much appreciated (you can email it to me, or to the fatass web-guru email@fatassworld.com).

Thanks for all the positive feedback - I hope to make this an annual fatass event.

Great fun run with terrific bush and beach scenery. Did the 30km section finishing at Stanwell Tops in 3:43.

Chappo did a fab job of organising a Rolls Royce quality event - a classic race for fat arses.
nikolay
Very nice run and would love to see it as an annual event. Thanks Chapo for organising it!

I did the 28km option to Otford. Took it easy the first 10-15km and picked up the pace at the end. Finished in 2:27h (to Otford Lookout). Had mixed feelings after the run – it was an enjoyable run with great views and was a solid workout and a good training for Six Foot Track. I also met some nice people there (including the coolrunner Nando and his friend Johnny). On the other hand I felt a bit like failing on the day with almost all the people continuing after Otford. May be I should have done the whole distance – in the true spirit of the FatAss events disregarding any training schedules or concerns about recovery... Oh, well, next year...

Thanks Nando and Johnny for the good company and for giving me a lift to the start.

I know its quite early, but does anyone know if this race will be going ahead again in 2007?

Thanks

I hope so. I couldn't make it this year but have been keen to give it a crack ever since. At least by time it comes around next I should be in better shape to go for the full 60.

In general, most fat ass runs aren't scheduled annually. Some are (black stump, poor man's, 12 foot), it's quite variable. Generally, you have to looby the organiser or just announce it yourself.

Failing that, the known list is scheduled runs is here.
