Hi frankdogg

All you really need to get a taste of tri is a bike and some running shoes. That's it! Don't worry if it's a mountain bike - you won't want to splash out on an expensive roadie if you don't like the sport.

You will get the same feel for the multi sort aspect of tri if you jump off your mountain bike after a ride and the run straightaway. Lots of people do their first race on a moumtain bike, anyway.

You don't say what State you are in, but if you visit the Triathlon Australia website here - http://www.triathlon.org.au/ you can find your Sate Association website under the "Community" drop-down. The Rules are there under the "Officiating" menu.

Once there, it's easy to find a list of affiliated Clubs in your area/suburb/town. It's nearly the end of the season, but many clubs run winetr duathlons or runs, so rock up anyway and make some new friends, get some advice. Triathletes LOVE to give advice to noobs (check me out!).

Good luck with it, it's a great sport, and remember - you can spend a lot of money if you want to, or next to nothing. It's all about taking part.

Cheers

Exactly what I was going to say Muzman.

Frankdogg get down to a club, you'll find all the help you need there when new.

Triathlon NSW has a great beginners guide: trinsw.org.au - there is a link to it on the front page smile.gif

There is more great information and some stories at Tri-Newbies Online - http://www.trinewbies.com/

I found this site very motivating and helpful when I was starting out (still do).

Two words of warning - it's American, and (always) beware of information overload!. Keep it simple to start - do a couple of races and then go to these sites to fill in your knowledge gaps.

Careful - it's addictive!

i went to watch a couple of local tris first when i was starting to contemplate it.
then you havea good idea of the procedures.

go in the mini tris first, they are full of less experienced people. (backstroke and breaststroke up the back of the swim on some occasions, lots of mountain and other bikes in the racks, much lesser percentage of wetsuits.) so really don't get too worried about the lack of gear.

also in your first few at least, probably better to use standard pedals and runners. less likely to have problems mounting bike, easier run through transition etc. i never use bike shoes in a mini tri.

a lot of the sprint/mini tris have a briefing on the sat afternoon to run you through stuff if you like and you can ask questions there.
