Interesting read. Best wishes for the big adventure Dave.
Enjoyed the read of the Cairns-Cape York adventure too. Pity the Canon Camera didn't last as long as you and your bike - I would have liked to have seen more photos from Cairns up.
Dave is also a sub 2:20 marathoner ja?

Hey Dave, all the best mate.
1. Get back in under 55 days.
2. Recover well and be in good shape to direct Australia's best ultra, in November.
Best wishes,
Blue Dog.

Wow - that's an awesome challenge. Can't wait to follow Dave's progress.
There are some long days (i.e. >300k days) in there, and in winter it might be a dark start and finish to the day.
I also notice that there is no rest days as well.
Best of luck dave!

Thats an enormous ride.
Good luck, Dave.
I hope you can update us regularly, as it will be interesting to follow.
It's a big country to go around...4 days Adelaide to Melbourne, 4 days Melb to Gosford, and thats only 1/7 of the trip.

Hi all,
Dave is now 1/3 of the way around Australia, very tired but not too far behind schedule. He is very grateful for all the encouragement and supportive emails. If you would like to cheer him on, you can send an email to
reports@davebyrnes.com.au or you can listen to his podcasts or read his daily journals
here.
Cheers,
Miss G.

Sounds like he's very cognisent of what needs to be done to get in on schedule, and is riding a very smart ride.
Keep up the good work Dave.

Just caught up with some of Dave's podcasts and journal entries. The relentlessness of what he is doing is not comprehendable.
Have to laugh at his diet though - roadhouse breakfasts, pies and sausage rolls, coke and fish and chips for dinner. Where do I sign up to do this next year?
Well done Dave - keep it up!

Unfotunately our favourite cyclist has torn a muscle and is held up in his quest to beat the record. Let's send him some healing vibes to get him back on the road ASAP.

Unfortunately, there is no good news. Dave has abandoned the record attempt and will be on a plane back to Sydney tomorrow.
It is a sad end to a really remarkable ride. If you haven't been following it I really recommend that you go back and read the reports and listen to the podcasts.
Even though he didn't make the entire journey and break the record what he did accomplish is still amazing.
Hopefully, he can recover from the injury soon and amaze us with some new adventure.

If that is indeed the case (I checked the website no updates)..
Hats off to a tremendous effort. No doubt Dave will be disappointed but know that we were all barracking for you mate. Still a fantastic achievement.

He sent this email to the Yahoo mailing list:
QUOTE
Sadly, folks, I have abandoned my attempt to beat the record for riding around Australia. The muscle tear I sustained on Day 25 is just not getting better. On the 150km ride into Port Hedland this morning it steadily worsened until I was again pretty much pedalling with one leg, despite strapping and Nurofen, and very thankful for a tailwind. I’m booked on a plane back to Sydney tomorrow from the Port Hedland Airport which is just across the road from a caravan park where I have a cabin for tonight.
As you can imagine, I’m very disappointed. Before setting out, I thought it was possible but not probable that I would beat Eugen’s outstanding record and that any successful attempt would rely on a lot of luck. However, by Day 20, I began to believe that I was going to do it. My bike and body were responding positively to everything I asked of them and perhaps I became over-confident. Who knows?
Regardless of my whingeing about being near my limit and my complaints about it being no fun, I have relished the experience and will always value it. There is something spiritual and cleansing (and certainly selfish!) about being totally absorbed in a mission that completely dominates your existence for an extended period of time. There is an immense sense of freedom in riding through the outback, or through sleeping towns, at night. There is a great sense of accomplishment in feeling the kilometers click by and reaching goals that you doubted were possible. Not least, there is a lot of joy in being able to eat and drink whatever you like!
Will I have another go? I don’t know, but it has crossed my mind. However, there are also a lot of other challenges on my list.
Finally, the support I have received during my ride has been both overwhelming and inspirational. I am very grateful for all of your messages and can only wish that I had delivered the desired result for all of us.
Thanks,
Dave Byrnes

For those not aware.
Dave's at it again, only this time he's trying to better 51 days set by Danish cyclist Erik Staarup.
Read all about it

He's having another go? Wow.
I loved following his trip last time. The enormity of the task is mind boggling. A documentary of this adventure would make heaps of $.
I have a lot of podcasts to catch up on.
Thanks Spud!

I spoke to Dave at the Canberra marathon and he said he was having another go again this year. An awsome task. I hope the body hold out a bit longer this time so that you can not only finish but beat the record. Godd luck and I will be following your journey closely.

And now his second attempt has failed:
QUOTE
Whilst heading to Perth in the morning, he was struck by a van and sustained minor injuries, specifically to his right arm which was hit by the mirror of the vehicle travelling at high speed. After an attempt to continue riding, the injury was painful enough to force Dave to stop and seek medical treatment. The contents of the right pannier bag were strewn across the road, his laptop being one of those items, and is no longer working. As a result, Dave does not have internet access but is contactable via mobile phone for those supporters who have his number. Dave has a flight booked home Thursday, to allow time to retrieve his bicycle and finalise some things today.
This is really disappointing because he seemed to be going really well up until now.

That's really disappointing.
He was starting to make up ground, and seemed to be adjusting to the long days and early starts.
It took a nasty hit to stop him.
