Ok, it is now 12 weeks away.

I'm in. I know nothing about triathlons but looking forward to the day. Started the training about a month ago and enjoying it.

Who's in?

Im also in. I also know nothing about triathlons but just like you I am looking forward to the day.

I started training two weeks ago and probably will be very unprepared but will give it a go anyway. I am nervous about the swim, but I am sure I will get there by race day.

Seems like there will be a few CR's up there. Should be fun.

I assume you both know it involves swimming / cycling and running rofl.gif

I think Colin is in, to justify his carbon art bike. Miners lives local so is a good bet. Auntie K maybe.

Me I am making my triathlon comeback at Penrith for the Nepean Triathlon on 18th November. Going to matchrace PLU from a distance, a very long distance.

Half ironman is a big deal. So make sure you have done the work and do some swims in an ocean or lake environment. Also have a spotter whilst you are in the water in case you go to far out to sea.

Also know how to change a flat tyre with a new tube. Otherwise could be along walk and you will miss out on the cut off.

HI all,

I am training for this one but I do have some issues. So the aim is to do what I can do, enjoy the next 12 weeks of training and hope to be there.

In fact I have set aside Monday nights for swimming at Ryde if anyone wants to join me. Also Thursday if I can manage it. Give me a ring if any of you are interested 0402824959 - or just turn up. I usually leave at 6:00pm from Penno.

Thomo - I will be there for this one and we can relive the 1980s - from the back.

Yikes....i was about top type "i'm in" until i read this bit. oh well, i'm in still, but won't have a spotter.

I have only done one triathlon and it was the half IM at Coomera last year. I quite enjoyed it - hard for a first time but was satisfied enough to try again. I have left the preparation too late for thid year's coomera (4 weeks left no swimming and only 3 rides) but managed to get approval from HQ for Port instead. So, with some trepidation about swimming amongst the marine life and current, i will hopefully be there.

You have done a half ironman. Will and Hamburglar said they knew nothing about triathlons.

When I did my first tri I did all my swim training in a heated 25 mtr pool. Imagine when I did the tri in a river, the water was freezing, I couldn't see the bottom and couldn't stand up at the end of the pool, struggled to find my bike. So I want people to have a postive first experience not like mine.

sorry Plu - won't be able to join you for too many swims. But yes, I'm in.

Funny article in the paper today about the fact there's "suddenly" a huge issue because the race falls on Remembrance Day. For those who know the course, the run leg takes you right through the Town Green where the town's Cenotaph is, and hence where they hold the town's Remembrance Day service. Given a fair proportion of competitors would be into the run leg at ... oh say, 11.11am, then well ...

Fact is, it was known from the day they set the date (some months ago) - the course has been diverted around the town green for this year because of it - and the paper only put 2 and 2 together today happy.gif

oh and knowing their calibre pretty well, I wouldn't be too worried about Will or Burglar not having a great race on the day cool.gif
Will
Ok, just a few questions:

- How far should be my longest rides? I was planning on going up to 140-150km just so that 90km won't feel like a huge distance on race day.
- I don't have a wetsuit for the swim and aero bars on the bike. Is that going to make a lot of difference? I know I won't be cold in the water, I swim in speedos all winter long. And if the aero bars only make a 3mn difference, I don't really care. What do you think?

Thanks
B+
Will your bike distances sound fine. But try to do some 100-120km rides with race paced efforts within them to simulate the effects of riding harder.
Get a bloody wetsuit, even if you just borrow one for the race. You will pay the price without out it.
Aero bars add to the comfort options and to the perofrmance but are not essential. I would still go with them if I had the choice though. Over 90km they will save more than 3 minutes, although the calculation on this is dependant on speed, frontal area, etc.

Problem is that my plan to only start swimming late has been thrown with a couple of badly bruised ribs from a fall off a chair while hanging up sheets for painting- hit back of chair with my ribs just under armpit.
Running has sucked, about 10km/wk @ 4:30 whilst in pain.

I got up to those distances and pace a while back, but constant mini-viruses (haven't had full blown flu)have had me on and off bike- missed this weekend too with the rain.

Looks like I will still do it, but probably jsut to finish- anyone got some floaties? biggrin.gif

Plu - i meet regularly with a little group on Tuesday nights at Ryde Pool if you want company.

Will - my 2 cents is and I agree with B+.... get a wettie!! I have a spare sleeveless Wing Wetsuit if you want to borrow one. This particular wetsuit has been lent around to a few different people so i'm happy to lend it to you.

Cheers,
K wink.gif

Will - to add to my previous post about being a first timer.... i had done virtually no lap swimming for about 5 years before the day itself, excpet for a 20 lap practice about 3 weeks before. i had written off the swim leg as being virtually last and was focussed on the rest of it. i bought a wet suit at 3.55pm the day before (shop shut at 4pm), after ringing around to try and find my size. i stood at teh start line wondering what would happen, and even had the embarrassment of leaving the price tag on!! as soon as i plunged into the water for teh deep water start, i realised why everyone was so hung up on them. like wearing floaties.
now i am no swimmer...my legs drag weed they are so yet i could feel my feet kicking on top of the water and came out of the water with my arms not dragging on the ground. it was a pleasant surprise and 39mins for 1.9k is faster than what i would do in the pool plodding along trying to drag my legs
you gotta get a wettie!

WETSUIT RULING
The Triathlon Australia appointed Technical Delegate will take a Interim Water Temperature reading 24
hours before race start and the Interim Wetsuit Ruling will be displayed at Initial Registration on Saturday afternoon. The Final Water Temperature reading will be taken 1-hour before race start and the Final Wetsuit Ruling will be announced. The water temperature is expected to be in the vicinity of 20 degreesCelsius in which case wetsuits will be optional, however a water temperature above 24 degrees Celsius will mean a compulsory non-wetsuit swim.

If it is warmer than 24 degrees I will swim nude!

huh.gif I think I've just outed myself as a competitor for Port HIM.

After some gentle persuasion from a dear and wonderful friend wink.gif , I've decided I will back up for Port after Gold Coast HIM 6 weeks beforehand. With the number of CR's competing it should be a great weekend!

Careful Hamburglar, you don't want to scare off the cheersquad, do you ? tongue.gif
Will
Hey guys,

What are you doing regarding accommodation? I'm looking for something cheap like a backpacker or something equivalent.

Can someone recommend anything?
Will
I just read this (on transitions forums):

QUOTE
To all our valued competitors already entered in the 2007 Scody Port Macquarie Half Ironman Triathlon.

As you know the date allotted to us for the race was the 11th November, 2007. This is, of course, Remembrance Day for our returned soldiers and those familiar with our course would know it goes right past the Cenotaph.

In our original plan and meetings with the RSL Sub Branch we proposed to bypass this area for the run leg. However, since the release of this information to the ex-servicemen and women and public it has stirred up the emotional issues of the day and its importance and our meetings with the RSL were to resolve all their issues with access etc. The emotional side is one, however, we cannot and could not change and to be honest I would not even try given this very late development.

Whilst the Local Organising Committee, Police and Port Macquarie Hastings Council knew the date was Remembrance Day, we did think we could cover off on all aspects with the local RSL Remembrance Day Committee to give them the respect they deserve.

The unfortunate news for us now is a definite need to change our race date. After hours of discussion and immense deliberation and negotiations across a range of issues and organisations, the new date for the Scody Port Macquarie Half Ironman with be 4th November, 2007.

I fully understand this decision will cause some issues with people and I do sympathise with them. Our customer base, that is you, is very important to us, the Local Organising Committee, and avoiding any inconvenience to you was our clear objective.

The RSL Sub Branch in Port Macquarie is very strong and I know many of the returned soldiers personally. They now really appreciate our change and I am sure you will agree the pain, suffering and endurance they encountered is far higher than any Half Ironman or even Ironman could throw at you.

Should you encounter any problems with changing the accommodation you have booked, please ring me on 0412 554 668 or email Michael@jrf.com.au.

A press conference is planned for 23rd August and I have included the press release in this regard.

Once again I hope this does not throw out your plans too much.

Regards,
Michael Reid

Chairman LOC - Port Macquarie Half Ironman

Can anyone advise? Miners?
thomo
Will, the only way to read the hyperlink is to be registered with transitions!!!!!

BTW They say there is a press release tomorrow.

Unsure why only one person would get an email and not others. Or they might not post / have not on transistions yet.

thomo
miners
yeah, only just read that over at trannies too. I tried ringing Mike for us, but it's a bit late (plus I imagine he's been swamped with calls).

Not sure if it's a hoax or what. That article I referred to did appear in the local paper on Monday - so perhaps some of the RSL members (or general public) who weren't party to the original meetings/discussions with the organising committee have now voiced their concerns - and those concerns have been deemed strong enough to request the change of dates?

Will let you know if I hear anything locally tomorrow
miners
Heads up

I rang Mike Reid this morning and he confirmed the change of dates, and that a media conference is scheduled for this morning. As you would have expected, there were meetings with the execs of the RSL branch many months ago which served to determine the run course diversion, access options and intersection marshalling. However, a recent mail out to members 2-3 weeks ago advising of access arrangements for the day met with strong opposition from the general (non-exec) members who weren't party to those meetings. Out of respect for them, the Local Organising Committee felt that they were left with no other option.

A representative of the local RSL branch will also be attending the media session in support of the Local Organising Committee, and their efforts to date.

Unfortuantely, Noosa is probably the biggest clash. But take it from a race director of a number of other triathlons, the months of November and December are very, very full. Word from the Noosa race director is that, while it's unfortunate, competitor numbers are now virtually full up there regardless. The main impact (apart from those who've already booked accommodation for the 11th) would be to the numbers of those attempting to compete in both races, which I imagine would be fairly small?
Will
Thanks miners!

Only 11 weeks left then...
Colin
Good time to book accom. Any suggestions???
thomo
Colin,

Cheap accom. available for 11th sorry.gif Miners shoild be able to steer you in right direction.

One week less training for you guys now.
Will
I think I will book a room at the YHA. I have found a twin room for $65/night. If someone wants to share the room, you're welcome. I will take it on my own anyway.

I intend on arriving Friday late afternoon and to leave Sunday night.
miners
sorry Will - I'd offer you a place but you'd have to spoon with burglar

If the YHA you've booked into is in Church Street then it's only 3km from transition on the south-eastern side of the CBD.
Will
Thanks Miners for the info.

Just to know how long is the drive from Sydney to PM? I think I'll leave at Friday lunch time to avoid traffic.
miners
I'd allow 4 to 4.5 hours depending on where you are in the city. From the Hexham bridge to Port Mac is about 3 hours from memory if that helps.
Colin
Thought Will was going to cycle up as a warm up wink.gif

4 hrs from my place (Hills/Blacktown)- adhering to speed limit (on the margins).

While I commend the date change, unfortunately it means that I won't be able to make it now. Word on the street has it that this member of the cheersquad may now be at the Canberra HIM in December wink.gif

I hope everyone - and our debutants in particular - have a great day.

I was thinking about it Colin, and maybe run back down as a cool down, with the bike on my back of course... blink.gif

4 weeks to go...How's everyone's training going?

The last 2 weeks have been really bad for me with the long week end spent in Byron Bay doing nothing and last week in Adelaide for work.
This week end was a painful come back to training with the striders 10k on saturday and a 90k/8K brick session yesterday.I still can't believe how painful it is to run off the bike.
Hamburglar
I'm out. I am going to do Canberra on Dec 16 instead which gives me some more time to learn to swim.

Disappointed to not be ready however I still may venture up to Port in a cheerleading capacity.
Peterhorse
Scratching. Feel sad to not be going to Miners' home town HIM. I was right until the date change but i've opted to be bashed up in my first Noosa tri instead (same weekend). will have wait another year to get there...sob.
Best of luck to all going.

That's a shame Hamburglar but you will definitely benefit from the additional training time.

I will also be doing Canberra but apparently there is a nasty little 'hill' on the bike course so I'm focussing on some solid hill sessions in the coming weeks. It should be fun huh.gif

And to top it off we will also have the good fortune of having our famous cheersquad there biggrin.gif

i've put a team together to take part in this event in my home town.
i did Noosa last year in a team and had a great time so i'm hoping for a similar experience.

I'll be doing the run, i can't swim and don't have a bike (way too expensive for me).
Looking forward to it, although it will be very warm.
Will
Sorry to hear that Hamburglar. I was happy to know I wasn't the only one making his triathlon debut at Port.

So who is still in apart from Miners?
kb
Mr Wildthing (aka Helmet) was looking to make his tri debut at Port but he also needs some extra time to learn how to swim. We will be at Canberra in December - him racing hopefully, me cheering.

If anyone is interested in doing the teams event, I wouldn't mind doing the cycling leg (or even the run).
Will
So will there be any CR coming up? Colin, are you still in?

Thanks to Brizza, I will be swimming in a state of the art wetsuit. Hopefully, it will help a little.

BTW, anyone knows where I can buy a good pair of tri shorts in Sydney area (preferably City/Eastern Suburb area)?

Hi Will

Try Cheeky Monkey Multisport on Clovelly Road at Randwick.

Ph. 9399 3370

They also have an online store at www.multi.cheekymonkey.com.au

They carry (among other things) the 2XU brand which I find to be the bees' knees!

Hi Everyone

I entered this event at 6.30 on sunday so I am also now in for my 1st half Ironman.

Will can you please PM the details of where you are staying. I need to find somewhere cheap and soon. Are you still driving up ? I am hoping to get a lift but haven't started organising anything yet and then I need to learn to swim, bike and run too wink.gif

Looks like Hamburglar is out since we last spoke at the strider 10km sad.gif

I did a longish bike on sunday morning after 3 weeks break.. Not exactly a break but actually GNW training and it was very hard to get back into it again but then again my only aim is to stay ahead of the cut off's and thus qualify for the full in April.

I can't wait to see the atmosphere I have heard so much about. Are team events still open ? I know a potental swimmer for your team Hamburglar.

Cheers

Funny, i was chatting with friends last night, and it was mentioned that you were considering this race, but you decided not to because it was close to something else you are doing... not sure wink.gif

Anyway, you should have a ball up there at Port. I look forward to hearing all about your first HIM.

Nah mate. I'm not touching the long stuff this season. Which was just as well, as the fabulous old achilles injury flared up badly during yesterday's club race as well rolleyes.gif

Friday night dinner/drinks in town will be on for anyone keen on meeting up. Will looks like a starter already
