Full Version: Anyone Doing The Noosa Tri In November?

Just wondering if anyone is planning on doing the Noosa Tri this year or if they have previously done it? I'm curious about any general feedback/thoughts.

Also, are there any recommendations for budget accomodation near the event? I'm looking into flights/accomodation at the moment and a long weekend up there could easily cost $1000 per person ohmy.gif

I have done it a few times. If it is your first Olympic distance, you will love it. Heaps of people and the vibe around town is cool. There are some issues that arise from the large entrant numbers. Sunshine and Sunrise beach are a bit cheaper but are driving distance to the start area. Staying close costs a few dollars and is probably full already anyway.

It's a great event simply because of the crowds around to cheer you on when you may be hurting. Maybe not the best place to try for a PB; there are just too many competitors. But overall a very well run event on a decent course. If possible, stay up for Fri, Sat and Sun.... watching the criterium and 5k Bolts are really worth it.
With regards to accom, I'd book now. I'm pretty sure everything in Noosa and Noosaville would be booked out by now. You could possibly try Tewantin, and drive in and out of Noosa area. Or else, go to a travel agent, pay a little bit more and see if they can work their magic.
I'm up there for my third time this year, so hopefully will see you on the course
Best of luck

Hi loves2run

A few years ago I stayed with a few friends in a rental house. This worked out really well as it had cooking facilities (its nice to be able to make your own food before a race) and a garage for the bikes.
I booked through this website: http://www.dowlingneylan.com.au

The Little Cove area is within 10-15 mins walk to Hasting St and transition and is really nice and peaceful.

Make sure you make time to have a walk or easy run in the National Park - its beautiful.

If you can its good to have a short ride on the course and check out "the hill" (both up and down) so you know how to approach it during the race, but don't worry if you can't, its not that big!

If you are a nervous cyclist be aware that there a LOT of people on the bike course.

Enjoy it, its a great atmosphere. Come back and give us a race report after.

Thanks, guys smile.gif I'm not 100% sure I will be going, but I will definitely come back & give you a report if I do. You all should, too wink.gif
I have a travel agent friend who is having a look into it for me. Fingers crossed. If I don't make it there this year, I will definitely plan ahead for next year. Sounds like a fun event.

ok, well, i'm in. took out a second mortgage and paid the fees.

now to learn how to swim and start doing some cycling.

did a brick session this morning - 15mins bike and 11k run - pretty obvious where i'm planning to focus for this

I've entered again.

This will be my 4th Noosa tri, and we make a family holiday out of it. Very crowded, but a lot of fun and a great overall atmosphere. Expect everyone to draft on the bike leg as it's impossible to avoid (5000ish bikes). $175 for an olympic tri seems a bit steep, but this race usually sells out so I guess they can charge whatever they want.

We just booked a townhouse at Little Cove, which is a short stroll down to Hastings St.

After the tri, I can drink beer and eat for the rest of the week without feeling guilty!

Pretty embarrassing turning up with a Sydney winter moon-tan though....

first timer question on my part - what does everyone wear?

i assume it is not a wet suit swim, so i was thinking
- swim in the speedos
- put on the tri knicks and singlet in T1 (plus cleated bike shoes)
- wear same for the run (just change shoes)

or do ppl go right through in the speedos and throw a singlet on for the bike/run?

if the latter is the go, i'm not that keen to practicing that one around my suburb rolleyes.gif

I just wear my tri suit.

Alternatively (for my first couple of tris) I just swam and ran in my cheapo bike shorts and pulled a singlet on after the swim.

Wear the speedos, long socks, a couple of wrist and head bands as well as some Aviator sunnies. Fully sick. I am planning on doing one of the Bribie races in this get up, with my Aero helmet of course.

Remember - get photos or it didn't happen!

Let me know which Bribie race and I'll be there for sure smile.gif

I'm in too!

Last year it was a wetsuit swim, but it depends on the water temp on the day.

Peterhorse, it might be hard to pull on cycling knicks when your legs are wet from the swim. If there is not too much padding in them and they are tight, it might be easier to swim in them. Then only worry about pulling a singlet on in transition.
Most people wear tri - suits ($120 upwards), or buy tri specific knicks ( approx $80, less padding then the cycling ones so they absorb less water), and chuck a singlet on.

Hey all,

Sorry this is a little off the title of this thread but I didn't see the point of starting a new thread just for my petty little question as it's still based on the Noosa Tri.

Does anyone know if the run leg of the Noosa Tri is all on the road, or are there times when you are able to run on patches of grass or dirt, etc?

Cheers
Aeroplane
The run pretty well stays on the road.
It jumps up onto a bike path for a bit, but there's no room to run on the grass or dirt at all.
Hope this helps!

Yes it did. Thank you!

I dunno Peterhorse... I see a guy on Coro Drive bike path quite often in summer running in his speedos...you can't get a more public place than that as you would know.

In my post-first-triathlon excitment I have just done something potentially silly - I've signed myself up to a team for Noosa and I'm doing the cycling part!

Eeek!! I didn't want to let on how pathetic I am on the bike, but I hope I'm up for the challange.

don't sweat it, think of me, never having done one before doing the whole kit and kaboddle with 3 months training. I must be nuts. I wish they had little L plates to stick on under our numbers laugh.gif

What time do you think I should be there on Sunday morning? I'm just doing the ride part.

I'll be racking my bike on Saturday so all I need to do Sunday morning is to make sure I'm ready to ride.

My team doesn't start til 8:30am but I understand that the transitions area is open from 5am-7am and then closed from 7:15am.

But then it says that it will reopen for Team access after the first swim start, so that has confused me.

Also, what is the parking situation like? I understand that it will be an nightmare.
I've heard there are shuttle buses running?

PS: I wish I had accomodation!

if you go to the USM website they have an acceptance booklet which you should download and read. answers nearly all questions that I could think of.

40 km in 1. 20? You're really fast! Well done!

well done Sunset, that's a snappy pace for a relatively new cyclist!

my first Noosa now under the belt. pretty happy as i met both goals- overall time (2:39:06) and position in my age category (100/230'ish). splits were 31:29 + 1:18:52 (1:14:30 bike plus transitions) + 48:45 run. was bloody hot on the run, and since our wave was second last befor eth teams, i passed shiploads of ppl struggling on the run. despite not having done any riding for 3 weeks and focussing on running, the bike was actually the best leg yesterday. i really enjoyed it, especially that great big down hill!

now if i can learn to swim better, i'll jump a lot of places.

well done to all those who made it through in pretty oppressive conditions.

keen for Mooloolaba in Mar 08 now biggrin.gif

well that was interesting! I survived my first tri! better yet I finished about half an hour sooner than I allowed. around 3.16 or so (38 swim, 1.38 bike and 59 on the hoof)

by the way, SPECIAL NOTE: if someone says that it's OK to do Noosa on a mountain bike, might I say that it IS possible, but you'll probably be only one of two. laugh.gif It was getting rather tedius with all the road bikes wizzing past, but at least I got lots of cheers, still pondering the "go the BMX" though. My bike is NOT a BMX! biggrin.gif

on the swim, - yish, the less said the better. ohmy.gif

on the bike - lesson - part of my nutrition plan was to consume a banana about half way out on the bike (it's how I trained as the bars and gels don't agree with me). however, in the hustle and bustle of the bike shute I lost my banana so I had to finish the tri with zilch nutrition. next time I'll strap the banana to the bike, not tuck it in my shirt....

I found the ride really fun, the 3km hill hardly deserved the name, and as for the downhill part, I contemplated the brakes, but just let it ride - what a hoot!

on the run - running/walking on empty for the first 5 kms till the endura I consumed at every station kicked in and was able to run the last 5 kms without walking. at least it was only team runners who passed me over the last 5 kms!!! It was hot, but not disgustingly so. all those midday runs in brisbane heat paid off.

overall, lots of fun and a well run event.

the best part about doing an event for the first time is that you come away with a PB!
