4 of us from Newcastle, 2x coolrunners (myself and Ingrid) and 2x uncoolrunners tongue.gif, are coming to the Megalong Mega in 2 weeks time, staying at Blackheath, and I'd love some recommendations for the best "touristy" thing to do on the Saturday afternoon, and the best place to eat on Saturday night??

...I'm sure Mr G could recommend a salubrious establishment just down the road at which you'll find the best meals this side of ...in fact either side of... the Explorers' Tree! cool.gif

Do they welcome vegans to the blue mountains?

It could be a cultural summit

The Bogans meet the Vegans

The civil war fuelled by pre mixed kentucky whisky/cola and celery munchies

Stay indoors on Saturday and eat in on Saturday night and keep the car lights on when you drive up there. We don't wan't to read about the "vegangate slaughters" in the Katoomba times.

So you think the "vegan" tattoo on my forehead might be a problem hey? wink.gif

Ah, it's singular, vegan. Don't unfairly prejudice my mates laugh.gif

LBP,Why not go for a Blackheath warmup down from Perrys Looksdown and around to Goveets Leap. Very scenic and the dogs would love it!BB.I meant "Govetts" of course. Here's your map:http://www.pnc.com.au/~wells/Blackheath.htmlBB.

thanks BB, we might do that!

the dogs are staying at home however, pugs don't run too well ohmy.gif

will you be joining us for the run?

For a deliciously devine food in Blackheath go to Vulcan's. It is wise to book well ahead though.

For a cool Saturday arvo I would recommend heading down from Neates Glen through Grand Canyon to Beauchamp Falls, then back up to Evan's Lookout. (Don't leave valuables in the car though, some of the trailhead carparks are attractive to lowlife). Or for views over the Grose check out Pulpit Rock. I haven't been up the Grose Valley since the fire went through a couple of summers back, so I expect someone else may be able to update the worth of the aforementioned.

LBP,

Sadly, my knees have not got better since BTBS, and blow up after about 8km. I'm seeing iSPORT next week for some (hopefully effective) advice.

My next longer goal is SMHHM in May. Then hopefully Hunter Valley marathon, which will be a first!

p.s. Perry's is steep so you would need to tuck one pug under each arm. So no room for a crossword puzzle.

I often have to do that on the flat! It's my weight training session, 18kgs of pugs.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery for the knees, and hope to see you at the Hunter Valley Marathon!

If you take a 30M rope with you and some harnesses you could abseil in to Grand canyon.
Nice little easy Canyon some short swims, taken hundreds of clients through over the years.

I guess we could make this thread the roll-call too!?

I am very much looking forward to this years MM. Last year I turned around at Alum creek as I didn't want to push myself too close to the event (I think it was 3 or 4 weeks from the race last year). This year it is the full monty as it is 5 weeks out, which is probably perfect timing for a good 4-5 hour run. Hope there is no leeches.

For any first timers, I thoroughly encourage you to get out there and have a look. To get a climb up Mini and Pluvio before the big day will take away some of the unknown which I found helpful. I remember last year being shocked by how long mini was. I knew it would be pretty steep but not for so long!

I still haven't decided whether I will camp up there on Saturday night to avoid the 4am wake up or not.

I'm excited! As Spud would say, Giddyup. good.gif
JoggerKev
I will be camping at Megalong (after I have dropped the water off). Will arrive late.

The burgers and milkshakes at the Fish n Chip shop are the bomb. Being so far from the ocean im not sure about the quality of the fish though... rolleyes.gif
The Bistro on the corner opposite the rail crossing is a nice historical dinner spot and it even has its own bottle-o for post race celebrations.

The Rocket park was an icon of Blackheath because it literally had the coolest play equipment in the world before they ripped most of it out due to it being actual rocket height, and possibly capable of intergalactic travel... You can still see where they dumped it on the hill in the caravan park across the road, as if to taunt the kids now restricted to the bogus "historical" automobile structure. Towards autumn all the trees shed and you can shuffle through the piles of leaves. Also, bring some bread for the the ducks in the pond.
The park also has the worlds only free (I believe its still free) public swimming pool. Back in the day they had a third pool which was basically scummy lake water with a massive diving podium in the centre until they filled it with grass. I also remember they hold learn to swim lessons in winter up there for reasons unknown and that the pool is not heated...
From the park there is a bushwalking track that will take you to Govetts Leap road and Govetts Leap lookout which is a def. must see after you read the story behind the name "Govetts Leap" on the statue opp. the fish n chip shop. The National Parks and Wildlife Centre at the entrance to the lookout is also worth visiting.

If you have more time, you can do all the touristy things at Katoomba but you cant beat Blackheath for the small town feel!

Blackheath Pool has got to be the coldest swimming pool in the world.
Used to take clients to it when it got too hot on the rock to climb, it is sooo cold it would take your breath away.

I would agree here - I did this little jaunt last year and blew up comprehensively on Meeny Meeny ( I refuse to call it Mini) and I turned round just before the drop to Alum Creek - I am absolutely sure that doing the Megalong Mega last year was the main reason I was able to complete the 45k a few weeks later.

all the best and hopefully I'll be out for at least part of the MM again this year.

hello Woodenlegs and littleblackpug, as another newbie already conquered the Black Stump, this may be my second Fatass. Still confirming home arangements.

Coming from Newcastle, i am pondering whether to leave Sat late pm, arrive sleep a little and then run, or get up super early at 3.00am and get there in 3 hours 5 mins , according to whereis. If somebody needs a running partner, newbie pace, I am in. I did the Back Stump in 4hr 55, but know I can do better as I had a bad prep and stomach bug all week.

Hi otisr, we are heading down sat morning and are staying at the caravan park, as we weren't sure about getting there on time on the morning also, that's a very early start! I thought it would take more like 5 hours....

Make sure you introduce yourself this time! We missed you at the Black Stump! We ran 4:05 there, so hang with us if you're feeling good.
Woodenlegs
Hi ostisr I also did Black stump(5hr 10min) and Otford to Bundeena and was looking for some runners around my pace, I am way slower than littleblackpug and you. I will wave as you flash past me.
I am travelling from the Central Coast and thought that it would have taken more than 3hrs, I imagine sleeping in the car would not be much fun either.
Zed
I can't get out there on 3 Feb.

Is there anyone who wants to have a hit out with me on the Track on 2 Feb?

I did this last year with Striders in just on 6 hours.

So that is my pace, lots of walking up Mini Mini and Pluvi, in both directions.

Hi All laugh.gif

Hope to be there for the MM. Going to Tassie for 8 days holidays two days later.
Hope there are a few slower runners, don't fancy running all the way on my own.
Going to start 6ft with 'early' brigade; age is 'slightly' catching up!
Look forward to seeing you all.

Cheers Brian

Goodness - 4:05, I needed a few happy gels to get 4:54, you have done well. At 0400 in the morning, nobody on the road except early bird's like me. Makes for quick travel. Yep, Whereis tells me 3hrs 4mins to Megalong. perhaps i need to trade in the laser for a GTO. I am yet to confirm but this may be an early one. Did a teva adventure race back in Sept, same times, left at 0400 and got there at 7.30 via M7, etc, good run.

I was wondering about doing Nellie's to Cox's - but still would be no where near finishing with you Milov - just a bit more of a bunny than you are used to.

plus Still not sure

a) whether a desperate young lady might need me to act that day (hmmm I know what that means so I hope you all do as well - she is directing a play that is on this Saturday and might need me to fill in at the last minute)

cool.gif whether my car's brakes are able to break enough or are broken too much

so I guess I will either be trying to grab a lift from somewhere to somewhere or be unable to take part in any fun - whether ET is involved or not.

I'd be more non commital if I could only make up my mind whether or not to be.

It appears that I will be doing this run alone so I'm taking the train option.
If I stand by the Blackheath railway crossing as suggested on the website will someone be able to give me a lift to the start?
JoggerKev
Woodenlegs - if you are there just after 6am and make it clear you are a 6ft runner or coolrunner then I believe so.
I would stand on the other side of the railway tracks ie not the great western highway side. A sign saying "megalong run" should work.

On a separate matter, I will be bringing some old 6ft clothing from 2006/2007 which we will sell for $5 per item. There is a mixture of caps, shirts, singlets in various sizes. Makes great training gear.

Hey Milo,

We did this last year for a nice 44km run (apart from the wicked tangle that ine and I had with an exposed tree root..) - it needed just a little bit of organisation to get cars/lifts sorted back up to the Tree, so this year I plan to start at Megalong, then do the trip up to Pluvi and then continue for another couple of kms past Pluvi before turning around and coming back - you then get that extra 2km uphill hitout past Pluvi, and takes the total round trip to 40kms.

Happy for you and any others to join in! cool.gif

Cheers

Hey All,

I got a lift up with Trifecta, he will drop me at the Explorer tree. I hope to be underway before 6:15am. Currently running with 2 injured ankles, so not sure if I will make it back to the tree afterwards... but I give it my best.

As for changing my name... well I am currently trying it on for size. milo was my original choice for a cr name, but at the time it was unavailable. Besides, after no DNFs last year I am 1 from 2 this year. Maybe milo will have better luck!!!

EverReadyBunny has opted out of this one, so even with a 'v' there would be no Bunnylov this weekend sad.gif

Kevin,

Cant make it up there as I will be in Melbourne playing golf, watching 20/20 cricket and cheering horses home. I will get Scurry to get me a couple of caps and a shirt. The caps are great for the pool in summer. Good luck all and have a good run.

Milov if you want a leisurely extra couple of kms, I might suggest running up to Moorora Bass FT and hanging a left down to the Jenolan River. Couple of extra kms of leisurely downhill running. ohmy.gif ohmy.gif
