Hey Cool Runners,

Looking at entering the lake Mac AROC event in April. Having never done one of these before firstly how does it work in relation to team members? Does each individual have to complete all legs or does only one of you team have to complete each leg? Also what sort of thing should I prep for in relation to the run leg? It says that there would be a mixture of suburban and bush but is that really the case in relation to that area of lake mac which is fairly well covered in bushland? Should I focus on bush running or road running?

Thanks,

Hi Nicho

The way the AROC races and adventure races in general work is that everyone has to complete the whole course and the team has to stay together - usually within X metres or within earshot of each other.
There are some events that are billed as advenure races, but are more like relays or solo events, but AROC is not one of them. Its all about the team!
I can't give you any advice on the running as I don't know the area, but I would say try and get some paddling practice in if you have not already, as I have heard many people say they lost a lot of time on the paddle legs during ARs when inexperienced.
Good luck.

My tips for doing the AROC races, or similar, is make sure you :-
[list]know how to kayak (even if not well),
[list]know how to mountain bike to the level you are comfortable with,
[list]practice navigation (you can lose a lot of time & morale going wrong) and
[list]pick your teammates wisely.

Anyone wanting to practice their navigation should try the Sydney Summer Series (www.sydneysummerseries.com.au)

As for practicing running : if you can already run, I wouldn't worry about it - though if you never run trail, you should get out on them.
