Why not? If you pay your fees then you have just as much right as anyone else to be there doing your best too.
I am a 51yr old female. I race anything from 800m up to 10,000m on the track whenever I want to, either in Vets races or in open club meets, and often races are mixed (Vets, juniors, & seniors). I have some friends who are vet sprinters. They race at the track in open club races too. Usually the races are seeded and they just put themselves in a heat that they are competitive in. Same with middle distance races. They are usually seeded so the races are competitive.

Definitely go for it. There is nothing like the nervous excitement immediately prior to a track race - beats road races anyday. You'll probably find you smash your PBs as a result.

there is a huge masters athletics culture here in MEL, I assume similar would be in SYD as well,
every night of the week there is a venue on diferent track, fee usualy 2-3 $ for the whole night,
races from 50 meters to about 5 km, various sprints, middle distance etc, longer races are kept tp
shorter side of it for the time constarints, but there are occasional 10km or 1 hour time trials,
20-30-40 minute TT quite popular.
There are runners of all performances, You would be actually at the faster end of it, only very few capable of doing 10km under 40 minutes.

Join the masters athletics in Your state, do the state champ in early march and the australian masters are during easter in SYD, there are few weeks left for entry.

mja - I only started track running 2 seasons ago, and I'm now 45. In AV meets I run the full program from 100m to 5000m (including hurdles and steeplechase), with the occasional 10000m track race thrown in.
In masters meets (usually at Croydon, alongside of Rudolph), I have run everything from 50m to 10000m.
To be honest, the first few times I ran, I thought it was more intense than road running, and kept thinking everyone was looking at me, but you know what? - they're not.
If it's something you want to do, go for it.
I would suggest giving ANSW or NSW Masters a call.

Go for it MJA, follow the link by Fossil and get on the track. I agree with Tom31, there is no feeling like overcoming the pre race nerves before a track race. To be able to warm up amongst, watch and occasionally race against the elite athletes is awesome.

Sydney Striders, UTS Norths and Sydney Pacific have strong numbers on the North side, also NSW Masters might be worth a try. All the links should be available through the ANSW site.

The World Masters Games are being held in Sydney in October next year. They are open to anyone, the only qualification needed is to be over 30 y.o. and the format means that you only compete against others in your age group.
