Painathlon is back for 2008 and provides the toughest and hilliest one-day run/cycle event in Australia while aiming to raise $25,000 towards Variety WA Childrens Charity grants. Painathlon is a not-for-profit event run by Perth med student Jonathan Hague and was won in an incredible 7.5 hours in 2007 by Brad Hosking. Jenni Tibbits was first female and finished the 10th and final challenge (10 laps of Jacobs Ladder) right on 10.5 hours.

Painathlon takes place on Saturday, August 9th this year. After beginning 7am at City Beach the field must negotiate 160km around Perths toughest fitness runs and hills to eventually finish at the Jacobs Ladder finale. Other challenges include Cardiac Hill in Kings Park, the Truth run in Brigadoon and Quadcruncher in Orange Grove. The aim is to survive and punch off as many challenges as possible on the race-card before sunset.

Full details of all challenges can be found at www.painathlon.com including a zoomable google map of the course and opportunity to register for the entry form as soon as it is available by email.

This year Peter Watson, former Olympic 1500m runner, has agreed to assist with the start and finish of Painathlon. Additionally we have a full triathlon/marathon style finish chute to punctuate the completion of this epic challenge.

Painathlon '08 costs $50 to enter but anyone able to raise $250+ for Variety (handed in before the start) will have the entry fee waived.

hmmmm, I would be very interested in this however not too keen on the cycling bit, might just have to get out on the bike a few times before hand.

That sounds awesome! Actually, it sounds rather painful (hence the name I guess). I'm tempted to give it a go - pretty sure I wouldn't make it in in the designated 10.5 hour time limit though! Any idea whether there is an option of doing it as a team (i.e taking on a couple of challenges each)?

Miko,
There is no formal team category, however there is no reason that you can't stick together with a friend or two and take it on. You've got the whole day and if it's getting close to 4pm, marshalls will direct you to go direct to Jacobs to attempt the final challenge.
Your punched race control card will reflect how many of the 10 challenges you've knocked off at the end of the day. It's not a given that everyone completes all 10 , although that is the aim.
Bit out there I know but everyone seemed to get into it last year.
cheers
Jono, Painathlon organiser.

Too close to C2S... and I'm not such a great cyclist! But one day if I'm hardcore enough... who knows!

What an awesome event! Sounds like a brilliant, exciting (and painful) day of excercise! Maybe perfect lead up cross training exercise for a marathon! Lexah??? wink.gif Might have to get some road tires for the Mountain Bike and give it a bash! Hey Lex... if you still have your MTB at that stage i'll get you a set of road tires too and we can give it a shot!

PS.. if anyone has a spare road bike sitting unused that needs a run in I'd be happy to offer to use it for this event! biggrin.gif

Update on the Painathlon:

There are 13 entries so far, hoping for 75.

This Saturday (28 June) at 9am there will be a practice run of challenges 1-5, that is City Beach, Reabold, Kings Park, Mount St, and the Bridges 10k. Meet at City Beach.

There is a category for services and sports. If you are in the armed forces, police, fire, emergency services etc., or involved in a sport, get a Painathlon team together to compete for a special trophy.

Check the website again for further updates.

At Jacob's ladder in Perth is the final leg of Painathlon. There is evidence that Jenny Tibbits finished with 1min to spare before cutoff (and she is an accomplished triathlete). I think she was the only woman to finish.

What the hell, I'm gonna give this event a shake. I thought it clashed with Cyclosportif in Pinjarra but fortunately (or unfortunately) its on the next Saturday. Some of these hills I know (eg Campersic Rd 'The Truth', Mount St) and some of the metro runs (eg City Beach groyne, Bridges, Deepwater Pt, etc). Putting them all together and getting to them all by bike. There will no doubt be pain but its for a good cause.

I did IMWA last year but I fear Painathlon may be a worthy rival for this. And three weeks to recover for the C2S Half Marathon.

Let's jump on board for this one.

Painathlon has come and gone - apologies for not posting results earlier. The event was won by Piotr Baizert in 8hr24min, 11 minutes ahead of Pete Shanley. Women's winner, and 14th overall in 9:48 was Jenni Tibbits. Full results at http://www.painathlon.com/

Very successful event with over 50 entries, of whom 35 completed the 10 challenging runs. Organiser Jono Hague was very pleased with the sponsorships raised by competitors.
