Just wondering if anyone is thinking of doing the Sprintman on 5 October? It is a 1km swim, 33km cycle, 7km run.
It's part of the Gold coast half ironman event -
http://www.usmevents.com.au/gchim/index.htmlI'm considering entering it but it would be my longest triathlon to date, and then I'll be doing Noosa in November.
I'm pretty untrained at the moment though so I only have a couple of months to get things happening! Not sure if it's too soon.

Hi Sunset
my main aim at the moment is Noosa. I considered the GC but so many others I enjoy Bribie Is, Raby Bay, Robina etc...it just becomes a bit too expensive..just need to pick a few.
Anyway, with a sound base which you seem to have, that distance should not be a problem for you...it really is quite a short swim, the ride you can take easy and 7km would be like a walk in the park for an active runner.
Good training run for Noosa...I did a full OD tri the weekend before Mooloolabah this year and had no problem recovering...
you'd enjoy it I' sure.

Yes, triathlons are quite expensive to enter and with that in mind perhaps I won't do Sprintman. I spent an absolute fortune on entry fees last season so I think I should pick and choose my events wisely.

That will be my debut Tri.
I am really wondering about my swim ability at this stage.

As long as you put in the training (assuming you can confidently swim) you have plenty of time until the race.
If really nervous consider one of the Bribie Is series which are either 750 or 1000m but very friendly as with a strong tide.

I think I prefer this event to the Raby Bay events... principally as a lead into noosa.
It is about 75% of the olympic distance, and a month out from Noosa. Perfect (for me anyway).
Nice to race a different course as well... there are 3 raby bay races each year.
I will be there.

I'm going to try and do more of the Bribie series this year and less of the USM (Raby Bay, Robina, etc).

Why is that Sunset? I ask because I will probably do one or the other and am currently trying to decide which. Last season I did a Bribie tri but have never done a USM tri.

Well I've only done one bribie tri, and I did several USM last season. I didn't particularly like the courses (Raby Bay was slightly better than Robina though). I didn't do any of the ones on the coast though so I would like to do the one at the Gold Coast and the one at Caloundra.
Bribie tri seems to be a smaller type event? And the water would have to be a lot cleaner you would think...

my wife's birthday that day and we usually go camping for the school holidays, but hoping to do the Sprint(person). won't be doing any decent times this side of Christmas but hoping to participate in as many tris as the family commitments permit. cost aside, i find these events really enjoyable.
personally, i don't train for the swim leg other than 4-5 sessions in the 10 days before the first event to get the arms used to it. i'm of the (probably false) belief that the few minutes i lose on the swim i gain from putting in more effort into running. swim for show, run for dough... well, run to try and get in the top half of the field at least
see you there

I tend to agree with the swimming training thing too. I really don't like swimming and I don't believe I'll ever be a good swimmer unless I put in several sessions per week (as opposed to just maybe one a week). The last tri I did I was the second last swimmer out of the water in my wave (only 17 in the wave though), and yet I placed 4th overall - so I made up a lot of ground on the bike and moreso on the run.

A group of us went out and did the Sprintman bike leg today, or a close approximation of it.
Nice road leading out of Calypso bay, onto not so nice road for a while, then back onto nice road to the turnaround.
All up about 50/50 good road/rough road.
Some rolling hills, but nothing too strenuous.
On race day the ride should hopefully be < 1:05.
