Hi, I was reccommended to come to this forum to ask about this.
This morning I was hit by a car while cycling, and the car driver was at fault. I am mainly fine, just some scrapes and bruises. I am going to go and get medically checked out, just in case. My bike is not fine though, it was damaged badly. My back wheel was bent badly, and I can't tell if there is any damage to the frame. I went to the police station and filed a crash report.
I don't have any insurance on my bike, as it was a reasonably cheap entry level road bike (~$1000). What should I do to recover the costs of a new bike(or a repair of this one) and any medical bills?
I was wondering what I should do from here?
Thanks for your help

Hi Ruki - glad to hear you are ok.
If you got the rego number of the car it shouldn't be too hard for the police to track the culprit down. If not push the police to put an ad in the local paper asking if anyone witnessed it.
Cheers, 2P

Sorry - I should have mentioned that I have the details of the driver as well as witnesses.

Then what you should do is get a written quote for repairs from a bike shop and send it to the driver.
The legal beagles on this site are better placed to advise than me on what to do if they don't pay up.
Good luck - cheers, 2P

Rukimoro,
Im certainly no expert, but my initial reaction is that is it really worth it pursuing the offender to fix bike etc?
I tried a similiar thing when someone swiped the side of my car a couple of years ago and as they were uninsured etc I would have needed to take them to court etc to try and get anything
In the end cheaper for me to fix myself. I think if you find out the offender is insured they should be able to claim for your damage as well as their own, but if they are not insured, just call it off and thank god that you are ok and move on
