Hi all

Just finished the City to Surf and really enjoyed the build up to the event, so have started thinking about my next challenge and have decided to give triathlon a go.

Just wondering whether anyone had any good advice about how to get started in the sport, and more particularly, whether anyone knew of any of the triathlon clubs that offered beginners training for males?

Thanks heaps.

Hi sbarry - welcome to CR!

I dont do Tris myself (yet!) but I do know there is a squad that trains from Yokine (Terry Tyzack) - though of course there are lots of others too!

What suburb do you live in?

I'd say this site might be helpful for general info: http://www.triwa.org.au/

But you shld be able to get some more personalised advice from other CRs smile.gif

Thanks for that. I live in West Leederville, so Yokine could be quite helpful.

I really enjoyed the City to Surf so am hoping that Triathlon will be a good focus for the summer. Just a bit worried about my swimming ability, so will need to improve on that first I think!!!

Hi sbarry,

I started out in tri before deciding to focus on running and it was a really good way to get super fit and the variations in training was helpful. My advice would be to join up to a local club (look at the triwa website listed above). You'll find that they'll have group training sessions for varying abilities and you can start training with others. I think it is vital for new triathletes to train in a group as you can start to learn from more experienced athletes the ins and outs of the sport. They will also help you with training, technique etc.

Good luck
Miko
Speaking of Triathlons, does anyone know of any triathlons coming up? I've been looking at the Calendar on the TriWA website, but it it still says "2008/2009 Calendar coming soon". I'm really keen to give them a go.

08/09 calendar is here: http://triwa.org.au/results0708/Final%20Ca...09%20Season.xls

Whilst I can't comment on any non UWA tri clubs, I'd check out the triwa website and join a local. I can't imagine, here in Perth, that there'd be any clubs that don't welcome beginners. Don't get swept up by learning to swim first, as swim squad training > solo training.

And don't spend too much money! Wait until at least next season to see if you like it enough or not.

I too have decided to attempt a tri... and I also live in WL... how odd. Anyways, I have peresonally set my sights on one of the shorter courses of the Power Station Tri (allbarnone.com). At this point I think I will be training alone. I've done some internet seraching and haven't really found much. A lot of the groups I've noticed seem pretty intense and not so beginner oriented. If you do find something I'd love to hear about it! biggrin.gif

Have a look here for coaching squads around Perth

I think you'll find that most, if not all, of them welcome beginners.
Don't be shy - just get out there and do it!

Not sure if this is of any use to any potential triathletes, but Stadium Tri Club are running a beginers course.
