Any Sydneysiders doing this one?

Hi Laimelde
I'm still to enter this event (waiting for payday). I did it last year as my first tri and like you I was nervous too. You'll be fine. Get there in time to listen to the transition talk and unless you're in front, just do what you see others doing.

I have entered the sydney event and it will be my first triathlon.
I am a bit worried about being very slow though as I just came back from a ride and it took me 25 minutes to do six kilometers. I am hoping that homebush is a bit flatter and my time might improve

Don't worry about being slow. Homebush is flat although you do start on a slight (and I mean slight) downhill and by the time you return to do your following lap/s your legs are pumping anyway. You'll be surprised how much your speed increases when you're with others

Thanks BC.

I think all will be good in the end -I went for another swim last night and I might be slow, but I'm convinced I can do the distance now.
And yeah, definately intending to be there in time for the transition talk!

Hi,
I'm planning on doin this as my first triathlon also. I'm only going to do the little one this time round as I'm battling an upper respiratory infection and struggling with my breathing. I'm also a non-swimmer, so without much time left to practice I thought the little one this year and aim higher next year.
Does anyone know about the transition timing? Does your swim leg include transition to grab your bike and the bike leg include the transition before the run?
I looked at last years times and wasn't sure how they worked it

I have no idea, I'm afraid. I'd be curious to know though.

To be honest, I can't remember whether the time in transition is included or not. There is nothing on the website to say whether it's included or not. I do know that the time from the pool to the transition area (approx 250m) is included in the swim time.
I am not sure whether there are timing mats on the entry to the area from the swim.

One week to go.. I've improved my swimming to the point where it 'only' takes me 3 minutes to do 100m.. I'm worried by the fact that it's such a short tri now -being slow in the first stage will be a big disadvantage in a very short race. But I'll do my best.
Good luck to everyone

take it easy this week.

I am doing the 300/9/3 and I am also thinking about doing the Nepean enticer.
I am a bit unclear on the registration times etc. Is it that event 4 starts at 8.30? Is there alot of waiting around? What time do people usually arrive?
jojo
Oct 14 2008, 11:45 AM
Hi - there is a more detailed timetable at
http://www.triathlonpink.com.au/sydney_timetable.htmlSo for Event 4, you register up to 8:30am, and transition is open until 8:40am
To the pool for briefing at 9:15am, and Event 4 starts at 9:30am.
I haven't done TriPink (although I went and cheered on some friends last year in Melb), and I dont know the layout of the Sydney course, but in general I would get there at least 45 mins before transition closes, particularly if it is your first tri. There is nothing worse than rushing while putting your stuff in transition. You want to make sure you have plenty of time to survey the run/ride exits and entrances, so you know exactly where you are going.
Also would be good to do even just a 5 min warm up jog before you put your gear in transition (when the tris are at the beach I would do a warm up swim, but you cant do that when the pool is already being used for the earlier events!)
Some easy tips:
1. Put your timing band on your ankle away from your bike chain (left leg).
2. Make sure your bike is in a low to medium gear when you leave it in transition - nothing worse than running out with your bike and jumping on, only to find you left it in a really hard gear from your last ride!
3. Skip anything you dont need (e.g., socks - pratice running without them). I have made a conscious decision to stick with socks for tris, as otherwise I get really bad blisters from my orthotics, but many others can do without.
4. To help feet into bike or running shoes, put a bit of baby powder in the shoes beforehand.
5. Depending how big the transition area is, I will write my bike number on my hand, e.g. 12L means - the 12th row as I run in, on the left hand side of the row. You will be amazed how blank your mind can go when the heart rate is up!!!
Good luck and have fun!

I spoke to one of the TriPink organisers via a live chat on the Healthy Body Club website today, and asked about the transition timing. The answer was:
- Yes: the transition times are included in your leg times
- Which legs: depends on the guys who set up the mats on the day.
In the Sydney race last year, the first transition was included in the swim leg, and the second in the bike leg. On the Gold Coast last weekend, both transitions were included in the bike leg.
So probably, for Sydney it will be the same as last year, but it could change *shrug*

Thanks for the tips JoJo and that is a good idea to write the bike rack on your arm.
I went for a swim last night in my new tri suit and to try out contacts under goggles. My husband thinks I look like borat and wants to come on saturday to yell "GO BORAT!" I feel ridiculous.
I just hope to finish before the presenatations as my times are looking pretty slow atm. The lack of running training hasn't helped.

I've lost two contact lenses to the pool in the last few weeks, lets hope it doesn't happen in the race!

I hope your husband (LaDiDa) and friends (Laimelde) is/are just trying to lighten the mood.
All competitors in triathlons have caps on, so you will both fit in. Most have goggles on.
You will see an array of bikes when you check in. If your bike fits you, then you have the right bike, Doesn't have to be red to go fast.
Re contacts I used this site
http://aquagoggles.com/ to have my glasses prescription put in.
These series of events are as serious as you want to take them. People of all standards will be competing / participating.
Enjoy the day.

This will be my first tri too. Entered in the 300/9/3 event. Little nervous but more excited. Hopefully it'll be the first of many. I'm probably a bit underdone - haven't done much running since Sydney half mara due to shin splints, have done three sessions in the pool and bugger all on the bike but as long as I make it to the finish line in one piece I'll be happy.
Having no idea about technique or transitions, I'm sure it'll be a steep learning curve! But we all have to start somewhere, right?
Good luck to everyone else entered!

The Gold Coast results were out by Tuesday, hopefully ours will be no later

I have no idea of my time in the 100/3/1, my friend was supposed to time it for me but he forgot. I struggled in the swim as much as expected -got a huge lungful of chlorine about 2/3rds of the way through, and had so much water in my lungs I couldn't breathe, despite trying to cough it up. I ended up making my way awkardly to the edge, standing there coughing for a minute, before wearily dog-paddling to the ramp. I was by far the last person in my wave -the first person of the next wave reached the ramp a bare moment after me.
I jogged all the way to transition, even overtaking a few people there, and had a nice fast transition, despite the awkardness of getting pants on while wet! The bike ride was nice and fast for everyone I think. I did pass one poor lady who had a pedal fall off just after the turnaround!
The run was okay, I was really worn from the swim, and the bike I held up for but the run was a bit too much. I ran as far as the turnaround, but then had to walk twice on the way back. Still, a pretty good effort methinks?
This was so much fun that I've spent much of my afternoon looking up what other tri races are around

Had a great time yesterday, despite feeling that I hadn't done enough. Had been sick during the fortnight before and training ground to a halt.
The day got off to a great start when the lady giving out the t-shirts asked me "A small for you?" I have never had anybody say that to me before. By the way, she was right - small fits perfectly.

My goal was to improve on last year's time - and I did by more than a impressive 7mins.

Hi girls, it's great to read how excited you are by triathlon.
My first one ever was the Nepean Enticer. I was so proud of myself when I finished. However, I had never swum in open water (all training in a pool) and I got a bit freaked but don't worry, because I rolled over and did backstroke until I felt calmer and then finished. A friend did breaststroke. After talking to many people I soon learnt that a lot of people do that in their first open water swim. If you can do some open water swimming before than I'd certainly try to.
Anyway have a great time. I'm probably doing my first full Nepean the next day.
