Hi folks, I cant pass up the chance to do 60km without worrying about cars - anyone else in?
orlando
Not me, I'm running the HM in Darlington. Maybe next year.
Suzy
Not me, I'll probably do my long ride close to home or on the trainer with Coach Troy.
Enjoy the freeway Guinness, as you say without cars it should be great.

Wish I were... but for better or worse it's Darlington for me!
guinness
ouch ....

i had a tumble at about the 50km mark, nothing serious - but i look like i've been through a cheese grater.
some bloke about 5 bikes in front of me touched wheels with someone, and down we went like dominos.

at first i wasnt drafting - since i was in it for the exercise anyway. then i got a bit sick of getting passsed by the generously proportioned drafters who werent even sweating and my competitive nature got the better of me. mostly i tried to draft on the edge of a pack so i could dodge any "downed cyclists" then i got trapped in the center as people started joining on the side and next thing i know i'm on the asphalt.

still managed to finish (av speed 38km/hr) , bike's OK, and i'll be fine in a week - but it puts a dampener on the morning sad.gif
Suzy
Sorry to hear about your crash Guinness. Hope you're not too sore. I fell over in the driveway last week and got some nice elbow grazes and a bruise on my butt. How embarrassing - I'm glad nobody saw me.
Were there many people on the ride? At least you had good weather for it.

perfect weather today - cool and still this morning.
hard to tell how many people because most probably do the 30km ride and those doing 60km dont see them.
i'm sure there will be some news footage - seemed like a pretty big event

thanks serena, yes running is definitely the safer option!

The other good thing about running is you can't get flat tyres wink.gif

I was having a great ride (the 30km), was about 18km in when I got a puncture... and my fiance had my spare tube and he was already at the finish line. So I had to wait for the LAST rider to pass before a bus came and picked me up. I got off at Greenwood, my fiance met me there and changed my tube and we started to ride home. About 3 minutes later... tyre flat AGAIN.

I'm over cycling.

Guiness 38k/hr is fairly moving!

Can we assume that's about the pace you went down at? ouch!

I'm just waiting for the Freeway Fun Run in 2010!

Now there's an idea I like Nate! Maybe the Freeway bike hike can raise money for asthma and the Freeway "run hike" can raise money for an asthma relative - cystic fibrosis etc. They could do the 30km course from Belmont, the 10km from Greenwood, and maybe a 4 or 5 km closer to Joondalup.

Why not include the 60k from Kwinana as well. I've run to perth along the Bike path from Rocko a number of times and would love the chance to run smack bang down the middle of the freeway for 60k.

Maybe next year I'll just make a cardboard cut-out of a bike and tape it to my side so it looks like I'm riding biggrin.gif
Kilee
I heard there were 8,000 cyclists all up across the 3 events with the aim to get 10,000 for next year

I too did the 60km not quite so impressively as Guiness but still an awesome time for me - I think you may have been in the same group as my boyfriend but he managed to just miss hitting the deck but definitely scared the crap out of him.

It was an awesome ride, managed to link up with some random stranger for most of it, thats why I love doing this sort of stuff, everyone is your mate.

As for the freeway run - where do I sign? Maybe we should organise one.

I'm actually not sure that sounds like much fun! The Blackmores HM was partially run on the M7 or something (I dont know Sydney freeways) and that part was the worst... with the sun beating down it was like running in the desert or something. It was kinda funny coz most ppl started running on the edge near the barrier to get what shade was to be had.
Maybe in the middle of winter this would be ok!

yeah we were probably going about 40 when the crash happened, but i got to hit the brakes for a second or so before running into the guy in front of me.
i cant believe how lucky i am to only have a few grazes, cuts & scratches - even the bike came out with only a couple of little scratches.
it could have been so much worse ... freeway fun run, far more sensible happy.gif
